For over two and a half millenia Aloe vera was used for helping. Ancient Egyptians used it and many civilizations from that point onwards.
There's an interesting story on Alexander the Great conquering an entire island (Socotra) just to get Aloe vera for his troops. I guess he would be astonished by today's Aloe vera products!
Other history examples include Aztecs, Spain, Europe in general etc.
